As the National Chairman, I am pleased to report that a number of major initiatives
have been taken to build a stronger structure to promote business trade and development
between Australia and Africa.
After some years of discussions regarding the need for a whole of Africa Council,
the National AABC took the decision to change the organisation's name to the Australia
Africa Business Council (AABC). This step was not taken lightly and is in line with
current views expressed by many NGOs and governments to take a whole of Africa approach
in regards to development of investment, trade and commerce. We believe that under
the new name we will be able to build our relationships with African countries.
We will also be better placed to promote discussion within Australia about initiatives
such as NEPAD and the African Union.
There is much work yet to be undertaken in the transition from being an organisation
with a focus on Southern Africa only, to an organisation that has an interest in
the development of the continent as a whole. We have taken on the task of developing
a strategic plan for the organisation. The plan will provide a blueprint for building
the capacity of the organisation to meet the new challenges that will emerge from
our changing role and focus.
